Private swim lessons in NYC cost roughly $65 to $190 per lesson in 2026, depending on where the lesson happens and how long it runs. Facility-based private lessons in Manhattan sit at the top of that range, around $98 to $115 for 30 minutes at places like Asphalt Green. At-home instructors who come to your pool usually fall between $65 and $145 per lesson.
That range is wide, so this guide breaks down what each option charges, what pushes the price up or down, and how to compare options by what your child learns.
What NYC Swim Facilities Charge in 2026
Most families start their search with the big Manhattan programs. Here is what the published rates look like this year.
Asphalt Green
Asphalt Green offers private lessons on the Upper East Side and in Battery Park City. A 30-minute private lesson runs roughly $98 to $115, depending on membership status and package size. That price covers pool time and the instructor. It does not cover your travel or the time spent in the locker room.
SwimJim
SwimJim bills monthly instead of per lesson. Once you convert their monthly private rate to a per-lesson figure, a 30-minute private lesson works out to roughly $174 to $190. There is also a $50 registration fee when you sign up.
Imagine Swimming
Imagine Swimming is best known for small group classes. Group rates come in around $40 per lesson. That is the lowest sticker price on this list, and it buys a shared instructor and a shared lane.
What these numbers leave out
Facility prices are only part of the bill. A Saturday lesson across town can easily take two hours door to door once you count the subway, changing, and getting a wet toddler back into a winter coat. Registration fees, membership dues and make-up rules also vary, so read the fine print before you compare.
What At-Home Swim Instructors Charge
At-home services send an instructor to a pool you already have access to: a building pool, a condo amenity floor, a backyard pool in Queens or Staten Island. National at-home services publish ranges around $65 to $145 per lesson.
The spread comes from a few things. Lesson length matters most. Big-city rates run higher than suburban ones. Some services charge a travel fee for longer trips, and some build it into the rate.
For many Manhattan families with a building pool, at-home lessons land at or below what a facility charges for the same minutes in the water. You also skip the commute entirely.
What Drives the Price of a Private Swim Lesson
Whoever you hire, the same handful of factors set the rate.
Lesson length
Most programs offer 30, 40 or 60 minute options. Thirty minutes suits babies and young toddlers, who tire fast and get cold. Older kids and adults usually do better with 40 to 60 minutes, which leaves room to warm up, drill a skill and then practice it in a real swim.
Private or semi-private
A private lesson is one student and one instructor. A semi-private lesson puts two students with one instructor, usually siblings or friends of similar ability. Semi-private lessons are typically priced per participant, so each family pays less than a full private rate while the instructor still has eyes on both kids the whole time.
Packages
Buying 10 lessons up front almost always lowers the per-lesson cost. Packages also lock in a regular time slot, which matters in NYC where weekend mornings fill up fast.
Travel and location
An instructor driving from Manhattan to a backyard pool in Staten Island spends more time on the road than one walking to a building on the Upper West Side. Some services add a travel fee for distance. Others fold it into a single rate.
Pool access
If your building requires a certificate of insurance, a guest registration form or specific booking windows, that adds a little coordination. It rarely changes the price much, but it is one reason good services ask about your pool before quoting.
Why At-Home Lessons Often Cost Less Per Result
Comparing price per lesson can mislead you. The better number is what it costs to get your child from where they are now to where you want them.
No commute
An at-home lesson takes 45 minutes of your day. A facility lesson can take two hours. If you work from home or have a nanny coordinating pickups, that time has real value.
Faster progress one-on-one
In a group class of six, each child gets a few minutes of direct attention. In a private lesson, your child gets all of it. Most of our students show significant improvement within 5 to 8 lessons, and babies and toddlers build safety skills first.
Regina C. put it plainly in her Google review: "He learned to swim in one lesson! While other schools showed no progress after 10 lessons." That is a fast case. It still shows why ten cheap lessons can end up costing more than five private ones.
Siblings share the trip
When two kids are close in level, a semi-private lesson lets them learn together at a per-participant rate. When they are far apart, we can schedule back-to-back sessions so the instructor makes one trip and you block off one window.
Familiar water
Kids who learn in the pool they swim in every week tend to relax sooner. A relaxed child learns faster, and fewer lessons means a lower total bill.
How Little Swimmers NYC Prices Lessons
We teach private lessons at your own pool across all five boroughs. Most of our families are in Manhattan buildings with amenity pools. Here is how our pricing is set up.
Lesson formats
- Private: one student, 45 minutes standard, with 30, 40 and 60 minute options.
- Semi-Private: two students, priced per participant. Good for siblings or friends.
- 10-Lesson Packages: priority scheduling, a written progress report, and valid for 6 months from purchase.
Why we quote on a call
We share exact rates on a short intake call. Pool access, building rules, location and lesson length vary a lot from family to family, and we would rather give you one accurate number than a vague range. The call takes a few minutes. We ask about your child's age and comfort level, your pool and the times that work.
The first lesson
Your first lesson is a trial charged at the regular rate. It sets a baseline. Your instructor sees how your child moves in the water, what they are comfortable with and where to start, and you get a clear sense of the plan before committing to a package.
Payment
We accept Zelle, QuickPay, monthly payment plans and 10-lesson packages. We do not accept cash.
Cancellation policy
- Cancel 24 or more hours ahead: no charge.
- Cancel within 24 hours: 50 percent of the lesson rate.
- Same-day cancellation: full rate.
We do not offer makeups for missed sessions. That policy keeps instructor schedules stable, which is what lets us hold your regular slot week after week.
Questions to Ask Before You Pay Anyone
Whoever you hire, a few questions will tell you what you are buying.
- Is the instructor certified, CPR and AED trained, background checked and insured? Ours are.
- Will you get notes after each session? We send progress notes after every lesson.
- Is it the same instructor every week?
- What happens if you cancel, and is there a registration fee?
- How long is a package valid?
