At-Home Swim Lessons in NYC: We Come to Your Pool

July 15, 2026 · Updated October 15, 2026 · By Harrison Alvarado, Little Swimmers NYC

Private swim lesson in a New York City residential pool

At-home swim lessons in NYC mean a certified private instructor comes to the pool you already have: your backyard, your building's amenity pool or your condo pool, in any of the five boroughs. You skip the commute, the crowded facility and the locker room. Your child learns one-on-one in water they already know.

That is the whole model at Little Swimmers NYC. Here is how it works and what you need to get started.

Why Families Choose Lessons at Their Own Pool

Think about a typical Saturday swim class in the city. You pack a bag, get your child onto the subway or into a car, sign in at a busy facility, change in a crowded locker room and share the instructor with several other kids. Then you do it all in reverse with a wet, tired child.

Lessons at home look different.

  • No commute. The instructor travels. Lesson time is 45 minutes, not two hours of logistics.
  • Full attention. One instructor, one student. Every minute goes to your child.
  • Familiar water. Kids relax faster in a pool they recognize, and relaxed kids learn faster.
  • No crowds. Just your family and the instructor.
  • Siblings fit easily. Two kids can share a semi-private lesson, or the instructor can teach back-to-back sessions in one trip.

What a typical lesson day looks like

The instructor checks in with your doorman or rings your bell. Your child changes in their own bathroom and walks to the pool. The lesson runs 45 minutes, the instructor sends notes afterward, and your child is in a warm bath ten minutes later. For a parent working from home, that fits between two calls. For a nanny juggling school pickup, it removes a trip across town.

Yes, This Works in an Apartment Building

Many New Yorkers assume at-home lessons are only for people with a backyard. Building and condo pools count, and most of our clients are Manhattan families with a pool on the amenity floor.

Plenty of NYC buildings have pools that sit quiet most of the day. Your amenity fee already pays for it. Weekly lessons put it to use.

Pools we teach in

  • Amenity pools in Manhattan rental and condo buildings
  • Condo pools in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island City
  • Backyard pools in Queens, Staten Island, the Bronx and Brooklyn
  • Townhouse and private home pools
  • Indoor and rooftop residential pools

Checking with your building

Ask your super or management office whether residents can bring an outside instructor. Most buildings ask that the instructor be registered as a guest or vendor, and some want a certificate of insurance. Our instructors are fully insured. For a full list of questions, see our building pool checklist.

What Your Pool Needs

The requirements are short.

  • Clean water
  • Chemically balanced chlorine and pH
  • At least 3.5 feet deep in some part of the pool

A heated pool helps for babies and toddlers. If your pool runs cool, we keep the youngest swimmers' lessons shorter.

You do not need to buy equipment. Your instructor brings kickboards, noodles and other teaching gear suited to your child's age. Have a swimsuit, a towel and a swim diaper for little ones ready.

Who Teaches the Lessons

Every Little Swimmers NYC instructor is certified, CPR and AED trained, background checked and fully insured. Our owner and lead instructor is Harrison Alvarado.

You get progress notes after every session, so you know what your child worked on and what comes next. With a 10-lesson package, you also get a written progress report.

Gabriella C. wrote in her Google review: "We had gone through 4 other swim teachers for our boys ... Harrison and his colleagues have the perfect balance."

Who We Teach

We teach swimmers from 4 months old through teens and adults.

  • Infants: a parent or caregiver is in the water for the first several sessions. The instructor coaches both of you.
  • Toddlers and preschoolers: safety skills first, such as floating, rolling to the back and getting to the wall.
  • School-age kids: stroke technique, breathing and endurance.
  • Teens and adults: first-time swimmers and adults who want to fix their stroke.

Most children show significant improvement within 5 to 8 lessons. Babies and toddlers build safety skills first, which takes its own time.

How At-Home Lessons Work, Step by Step

1. Book and tell us about your pool

When you book, we ask about your child's age, comfort in the water, your pool and the times that work for you.

2. Short intake call

We confirm pool access and your location, then share exact rates. Pricing depends on lesson length, format and where you are.

3. Trial lesson

Your first lesson is a trial charged at the regular rate. It sets a baseline. The instructor sees where your child is and plans from there.

4. Weekly lessons

Same instructor, same pool, same time each week when possible. Consistency is what builds skills.

5. Progress notes

After each session, you get notes on what your child practiced and what is next.

Lesson Formats

  • Private: one student, 45 minutes standard. We also offer 30, 40 and 60 minute options.
  • Semi-Private: two students, priced per participant. Good for siblings or friends at a similar level.
  • 10-Lesson Packages: priority scheduling, a written progress report, valid for 6 months.

Our hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 7pm and Saturday and Sunday 9am to 5pm.

Learning in Your Own Pool Is a Safety Advantage

Young children most often get into trouble in water close to home, including residential pools. A child who learns in the pool they swim in every week learns its steps, its walls, its depth changes and the fastest way out.

General swimming skills are good. Skills practiced in the exact pool your child uses are better. Pair lessons with constant adult supervision every time your child is near water, and see our water safety tips for more.

How the Cost Compares

Group classes at a facility can look cheaper per session. Add in the commute, registration fees and the extra sessions group classes often need, and the gap narrows. Private lessons usually get kids swimming in fewer sessions.

We accept Zelle, QuickPay, monthly payment plans and 10-lesson packages. No cash. Cancellations 24 or more hours ahead are free, inside 24 hours are billed at 50 percent, and same-day cancellations at the full rate. For a full breakdown of NYC prices, read our guide to private swim lesson costs.

Serving All Five Boroughs

We teach in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Our Google rating is 5.0 from 8 reviews. Wherever your pool is, we come to it.
